ARE ROOF TILES POROUS?

Yes roof tiles are porous - Both clay and concrete tiles are porous - they absorb small amounts of water, which then evaporates harmlessly.

Does that mean that roof tiles leak? No. As long as they are not broken and are laid correctly, at the correct roof pitch, they will not leak.

Each tile has a minimum pitch it can be laid down to, for example most concrete plain tiles have a 35 degrees minimum pitch. If plain tiles are laid at a pitch below 30 degrees, water can actually run up the tile and down into the batten and breathable membrane, leading to eventual leaks.

About Roofing Supplies stock and supply concrete and clay roof tiles from the UKs leading manufacturers: Sandtoft, Redland and Marley.
