WHY CHOOSE A FLAT ROOF?

Flat roofs are the best choice for those who wish to opt for a simple and inexpensive roof that still provides a durable and strong shelter, protecting the building from adverse weather, keeping heat in, and ensuring no water gets through.

A flat roof is most commonly used on small, outdoor structures such as sheds, outbuildings, and agricultural buildings, though is also a popular option for extensions, garages, and conservatories.

A flat roof is an easy way to ensure water, as well as insects and animals, cannot enter a building and will protect the contents of the building from becoming damaged. Their low cost and lightweight properties mean they are an effective and popular solution for those who want an effective roof covering that doesn't break the bank.

FLAT ROOF MATERIALS

There are several options in terms of the materials a person can use to create a flat roof, and your choice will depend on the purpose of the roof, your budget, and personal preferences.

Fibreglass flat roof kits

Fibreglass flat roof kits (GRP flat roofs) are extremely durable and easy to maintain. They are constructed by covering plywood in resin with a fibreglass netting on top and finished with an additional layer of resin to seal it in. After the resin has cured a weatherproof coating is applied to ensure no moisture can ingress into the roof.

Flat roof felt

The most popular flat roof option is a felt roof. The most contemporary method to create a felt roof is by using torch-on felt roofing sheets which are laid down in layers. After the first layer goes down, a blow torch is applied to create an adhesive which the next layer will bond to. The sheets are built up in this way to create a durable, watertight finish. Felt roofing is extremely lightweight and easy to install and is one of the lowest cost ways to create a flat roof.

Additional options include rubber roofing where a single layer of seamless rubber is applied to create a watertight seal over the flat roof. This is another popular option for those who want a quick solution that is extremely easy to install and lasts for several decades too. Liquid rubber flat roofs are an alternative of this where the liquid rubber is brushed on instead of being laid down and can be useful for those wanting to create more complex roof shapes.

Mastic Asphalt can also be used for flat roofs (and floors) and is again popular due to its strength and highly waterproof properties.
