WHAT ARE CHIMNEY POTS?

Chimney pots sit on the roof of a house atop a chimney flue. They are made from clay and are traditionally round in shape, though they can be manufactured in many different shapes including square chimney pots, rectangular chimney pots, and even octagonal designs.

The definition of a chimney pot from the Dictionary of Architecture and Construction is as follows:

"A cylindrical pipe of brick, terra-cotta, or metal placed atop a chimney to extend and thereby increase the draft."

The pot is essentially an extension that juts out of the roof. Its purpose is to ensure that there is an optimum draft for combustion. Without oxygen, a fire will not light, so chimney pots help to ensure that enough oxygen reaches the flames to keep the fire going and additionally means that the smokestack is taller.

The pot is open at the bottom end to enable it to be attached to the top of the chimney flue, the opposite end is also open, though vented, so it is almost tube-like in shape. Most designs are tapered at the top; however, nowadays a chimney pot can be practically any shape, size, or colour a person desires.

Historical buildings tend to have the same type of chimney pot according to the era in which they were built. A Tudor or Medieval Revival building will probably have wide, tall chimneys with either circular or octagonal-shaped pots at the top. These were the most prominent chimney type during this era as people began to make use of coal to warm their homes, but needed an effective way to remove the smoke and other potentially dangerous fumes without compromising on heat loss.

As chimney pots grew in popularity, designs became more extravagant as another way to demonstrate a person’s wealth and status. Therefore some chimney pots are incredibly elaborate in design and decoration to denote social status.
